John D. Rockefeller Jr. designed and had built a network of motor-free carriage roads (for horse and carriage) on Mount Desert Island (in Acadia National Park. Construction lasted from 1913 to 1940 resulted in a system of roads and beautiful stone bridges. Here is one of the bridges seen from the automobile road.
